Watch Is the Black Market All Bad? - Nils Gilman Video Is the Black Market All Bad? - Nils Gilman
May 05, 2012
Complete video at: fora.tv Author Nils Gilman argues that black markets may not be a negative from every perspective. "If you like entrepreneurship, if you like innovation," says Gilman, "then you've got to love deviant globalization." Gilman notes that the narcotics industry in Mexico directly employees 400000 people - more than finance or oil. ----- Nils Gilman on "Deviant Globalization." This program was recorded in collaboration with the Long Now Foundation, on May 10, 2010. Nils Gilman describes deviant globalization as "the unpleasant underside of transnational integration." There's nice tourism, and then sex tourism, such as in Thailand and Switzerland. The vast pharmacology industry is matched by a vast traffic in illegal drugs. The underside of waste disposal is the criminal dumping in the developing world of toxic wastes from the developed world. Military activities worldwide are fed by a huge gray market in weapons. Internet communications are undermined by floods of malware doubling every year. Among the commodities shipped around the world are exotic hardwoods, endangered species, blood diamonds, and stolen art worth billions in ransom. These are not marginal, "informal" activities. These are enormous, complex businesses straight out of the Harvard Business Review. The drug business in Mexico, for example, employs 400000 people. A thousand-dollar kilo of cocaine grows in value by 1400-percent when it crosses into the US -- nice profit margin there. - Long Now ...

Sep 15, 2011
On September 14, 2011, members from Oregon's faith, labor, business, civil rights and immigrant communities spoke out against E-Verify during a press conference in Portland. E-Verify, an internet based computer database run by the Department of Homeland Security, is a voluntary system used by employers to screen prospective employees. The press conference was part of the national day of against the legislation making the flawed program mandatory. HR2164, being promoted by Texas Congressman Lamar Smith, would force employers to perform a computer check for every job applicant against an error-prone government database, before any American worker could start a new job. To resolve any errors, an individual would have to go to a Social Security (SSA) or Department of Homeland Security (DHS) office. This law, if passed, would cause lawful American workers to lose their jobs or be denied employment, an increase the risk of government intrusion, drive jobs into the underground economy, deprive the government of tax revenue, and impose additional costs on small businesses—all without meeting the program's stated purpose of ending the hiring of undocumented workers. America needs a real solution to upgrade the obsolete immigration system. Lamar Smith's E-Verify bill seeks to remove immigrant workers out of the US economy. The bill is completely unrealistic. Immigrant workers are an important and vital part of many industries and the US economy, and that the real solution is to ...
